Researcher

• As a Researcher, conducted literature and field social science research. Research areas have spanned education and education reform (including the effect and potential uses of information and communications technologies in education), knowledge representations and structures on the Internet, and the effects of Internet technologies on communities and community formation.
• Mostly recently, have been exploring questions of sustainability from an applied anthropology perspective both in the “classic” domain of economic-environmental sustainability and, in a less typical fashion, “sustainability” as a perspective from which to analyze other problems of directed change such as education reform.
• Under contract for a book on education reform tentatively titled “Connected Learning”.

College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)

Research Assistant

• As Research Assistant to the program co-director, tasked with research, writing/editing of the quarterly and annual reports on the status of CAMP as required by the U.S. Department of Education of federal grant programs.
• Because of increased difficulty in finding and recruiting qualified student candidates for CAMP, was assigned an additional research project to determine why. Research suggested that changes to immigrant and migrant worker law in Colorado in 2006 had deterred both legal and illegal migrant workers from entering the state. Wrote a report that was presented to the President of MSCD, the Department of Education, and the 2007 HEP/CAMP Western Stream Conference. Research also suggested ways to more efficiently recruit program candidates. Program quotas were again achieved in the latter half of 2007 and in 2008.

Project Manager

• SCG was a “consortium company” composed of an in-house sales and project management staff, and partner organizations spanning print and prepress, information technology, specialized horizontal and vertical marketing, manufacturing, and creative services. As Project Manager, my primary responsibilities included technical sales, strategic consultation, proposal writing, management of consortium partner contributions, and project budgeting and scheduling.
• Projects included a rebranding and promotional campaign for the Breckenridge Film Festival, a large-scale channel marketing campaign for a garment manufacturer, and marketing and technical services project for a web hosting startup company.

Chameleon Creative, Inc. January, 1993 to April, 2001

President

• Founded and lead Chameleon Creative from a graphic design firm to a full-service advertising and marketing agency with a staff of seven. As an entrepreneur in a rapidly growing company, my roles and responsibilities shifted significantly, from “wearing many hats” in hands-on roles to management, delegation, and facilitation. I sold the company in 2001.
• In the role of Lead Account Executive, developed and maintained long-term client relationships with more than 150 companies, including Maxtor Corporation, Kelty, Eagle Bank, KBCO, E-Town, CommWorld International, Astarte Fiber Networks, Protogenic, and Titan Laboratories.
• In the role of Project Manager, developed complex proposals; managed project scheduling; managed outside contractors (e.g. photographers, copy writers, graphic designers, videographers), vendors (e.g. printing and prepress, market research, product manufacturers), and in-house resources; and ensured that all projects – typically ten or more projects simultaneously - were successfully completed on-time, on-budget, with a high degree of quality, and profitably for Chameleon Creative.
• In the role of Creative Director, ensured that all creative, technical, and strategic goals for clients were achieved, and performed and/or supervised graphic design, copy writing, photography, videography, etc. Developed expertise in then-current tools and technologies such as Freehand and Illustrator, 3DStudio, Quark Xpress, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop; traditional and digital printing and prepress; Internet/web technologies for marketing and advertising; and, to a lesser degree, desktop video production.
• In the role of President/Chief Operations Officer, successfully managed and/or performed AR/AP processing; employee hiring and human resources functions (employee benefits, training and development, etc.); business planning and financing; and taxation, legal compliance, and contract negotiation.
• The core, and chief challenge, of Chameleon Creative’s business model was “creative problem solving” that demanded unique solutions for each client; no two projects were ever the same. I ensured that all that could be systematized was supported by formal “best practices”, training, and tools (such as a project management and estimation system that I coded in Filemaker Pro) so that the inherently fickle processes of creative insight and inspiration could flourish within the time-and-money constraints of running a business and satisfying client needs.
• Chameleon Creative received several national awards for its work and more than 50 letters of appreciation from its clients and vendors. Chameleon Creative was also involved in the Boulder community by organizing or sponsoring events such as a large corporate blood drive, the Chautauqua 100^th Anniversary, and Practice for Pets.

Computer Source 1992-1993

Sales Associate

• Initially hired for retail sales of PC-based computer, network, and printing equipment. Met or exceeded sales quotas throughout term of employment.
• Given additional responsibilities to assist on technical sales, customer service, installation, and maintenance for corporate client base.

U.S. Marine Corps 1986-1992

Sergeant, Computer Programmer

• Trained as a COBOL programmer; maintained and updated version one of the Marine Corps Institute Automated Information System (MCIAIS).
• As part of a development team, ported version one MCIAIS code to Transact/3000 on an HP3000 series 58 mainframe using the Image/3000 database management system (DBMS).
• As part of a subsequent development team, redesigned and coded version two of MCIAIS using Transact/3000 (both batch and interactive code) with Image/3000, dBase II, Pascal and C code for running and transferring data from a Scantron forms reader, and hexadecimal code embedded in print job data streams to more than double the efficiency of nightly printing batches.
• Designed, installed, and maintained two local area networks (LAN) for a user base of approximately 300 workstations: initially, a Banyan Vines-based system using Token ring network technology; subsequently, a replacement LAN based on early 10BaseT and Novell Netware.
• Developed and conducted training seminars for mainframe operators, mainframe users, and LAN users, and lead a team to develop a complete documentation system for MCIAIS.
• Promoted to Programming Department non-commissioned officer in-charge (NCOIC).
• Received a Navy Achievement Medal and several Letters of Commendation for the aforementioned work.

Computer Skills

Proficient with the complete Microsoft Office suite in Windows and Macintosh. Proficient in the use of print and web graphic design software including Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator, Quark Xpress, Dreamweaver, Frontpage, and Flash. Some experience in Unix and Linux environments. Some experience with the statistics software SPSS. Excellent Internet research skills up to a scholarly level of rigor. Experience in the design, construction, and maintenance of low- and mid-range networks.
